At the COP15 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Copenhagen 7-18 December) a Nitrogen Side Event will be organised, hosted at The Bella Center. The event has the title: "Options for including nitrogen mangement in Climate Policy Development" and will take place at the U.S. Center (Hall C5) on December 7 (18.00 - 19.00).

This side event aims to bring the impact of nitrogen on climate change and its environmental impacts to the forefront by addressing four main objectives:

  • To highlight the important role of nitrogen in climate processes, including not only the direct effects of nitrous oxide and other nitrogen related emissions such as nitrogen oxide (impacting ozone), ammonia, and aerosols, but also linkages between the nitrogen and carbon cycles.
  • To describe innovative nitrogen management strategies relevant to mitigating climate change, while limiting the environmental impacts.
  • To highlight the anthropogenic perturbations of the nitrogen cycle, which cross ministerial boundaries, and which will require engagement of science and policy communities in different areas: human health, air and water quality, biodiversity, agriculture and energy.
  • To discuss ways forward in the development of synergistic nitrogen management strategies in relation to climate change mitigation.

The programme for this event is available via this link (pdf-file).
